So I know I've heard from other people online since it first aired that the Persona 5 anime was mediocre or bad, and maybe my perception of it is skewed by the fact that I haven't played (and probably never will play) the game it's based on... but I'm actually enjoying this anime a lot. I just finished episode 17 and got to the point where the Phantom Thieves change Futaba's heart and she joins the group which was awesome.

The story has been interesting, and the art/animation (aside form a few cheesy CG effects here and there) is pretty stylish. But the best part of the show has been the characters and their interactions that just constantly have me smiling. Ryuji is a lovable meathead, Makoto is a badass and is currently in the lead for best girl, and Ren is a lot more fun than the average "edgy protagonist" character in a series like this.

So to anyone else here who's seen it: What exactly am I missing that had people calling the Persona 5 anime mediocre or bad? Is it a rushed adaptation of the game's story that left out something really major? Did the original broadcast have bad quality issues and I'm only seeing the cleaned up version? Was the dialogue in the Japanese version too stiff and the dub livened things up? Do I just have irredeemably shit taste?
