That's pretty much the only reason anyone knew who James Wan was before Aquaman, though. His entire filmography is basically just Aquaman, The Fast and the Furious 7, and then like a dozen horror movies.

It's probably a case where Aquaman was literally the most successful of all the DCEU movies (yes, really), so Warner Bros is more comfortable trusting him to have more control over things, and he wants to lean more into horror because it's one of the few things he really knows how to do.

Though to be honest, Aquaman seems like the kind of film that could actually do horror pretty well. There's some borderline Lovecraftian shit going on in the ocean if you go deep enough, and there've been some pretty dark Aquaman stories over the years. The real problem with Aquaman is that nobody really knows anyone from his Rogue's Gallery other than a) his own relatives, and b) Black Manta, so you run out of potential villains for films (at least ones people won't think are lame) REALLY quickly.

If they actually have a villain in mind (and honestly, I have literally no idea who it would be), I could see them doing a Cthulhu/Dagon sort of story as part of it to make things a bit more robust.

If we were talking Namor rather than Aquaman, I'd say I could see them going a feud with Lemuria/Mu/Thule, but that's never really been an Aquaman thing (that I know of). Though I suppose the closest to that they could get is if they went with the post-Brightest Day storyline (before New 52 ruined everything) where it turned out Mera was actually from a secret alternate water dimension and had actually come to Earth to kill Arthur. But then that just makes Aquaman's in-laws the villains, so we're right back to the whole "his own relatives" deal.

On the other hand, that particular storyline was also a) written by Geoff Johns, and b) introduced Kaldur'ahm/Aqualad/"Blackualad", so I could easily see them wanting to adapt it in the films.
