Like you say "Challenger", the main party overall is not that left leaning. Bernie probably only ran as a Democrat because how messed up the US 2 party system is.

You claim that, but over HALF of the Democratic primary candidates supported a wealth tax (an idea so progressively far-left that only FOUR nations in the world have one, and not even Sweden -- one of the furthest-left nations by reputation -- has it). In addition, either three or four suggested that billionaires shouldn't exist, an idea that should be unthinkable in a true free-market society (even a somewhat leftist one) yet they were met with rousing applause.

And it's not a matter of Bernie being a Democrat -- which he really isn't (and he literally won't be once the election ends and he leaves the party again) -- but instead the fact that so many Democrats voted for him to be the party's candidate. Bernie may be cartoonishly to the far-left, but the real indication is that so many Americans on board with his thinking. And the fact that he didn't win the primary isn't necessarily because Democrats don't agree with him, but because they want to push somebody more "moderate" to face Trump (and Bernie isn't exactly moderate).
