When Portal 2 came out, a lot of people were cynical about it because the puzzles were often very limited in scope -- you often just looked for where the white panels were and asked "what can I do with these?" rather than it being completely open-ended. Those same people were usually very down on the story, though, and saw Portal 2 as lacking in innovation.

Years later, I don't think anyone really still has that take. Probably because Portal 1 was so long ago that people barely remember it in a way that distinguishes it from Portal 2. And Portal 2 certainly did refine a lot of aspects of the game where Portal 1 was rough around the edges.
