Yep. Invented and founded in America. There's only like 16 million those that belong worldiwde, and like 90% of them live in America. I think the Philippines has the second most with like 600K. So it's pretty common for non-Americans to not really know Mormons are a real thing. And since they are (rightfully) almost always portrayed as a joke in American media, even foreigners heavily exposed to American media might not know much more of the subject matter than that.

That's kinda what 1 or 2 of the Brits thought, that Mormonism was just a strawman that the musical had invented as an allegory to all religion being silly in general.

tbh, even in the US, Mormons are rare and poorly understood. Back when Romney ran for president, stations had to run programming explaining what Mormons are >_>
