I understand the DNR if someone is in a situation where there is no hope but for people who have a chance to survive their illness, lack of being unable to pay should not determine whether one lives or not especially when we have health insurance.

The sole purpose of insurance of any kind is to have piece of mind and the purpose of health insurance is to pay for medical care we can't afford as individuals.

Sadly I have gone down that road with my wife, most health insurance has a cap of 1 million dollars and if your in ICU any length of time (my wife was for like 3 weeks at Saint Luis in Gilroy CA) you eat through that in no time. Once you hit the cap, the dump you like a hot coal and then you have to go through all your assets/savings etc (which happens really fast trust me) before you can get on state medical.

For me though it's more than that, I still try to help people and make at least a small positive difference in the world, but I have no dependants or responsibilities left, and no incentive to go through a long period of recovery etc, nor do I have any wish to be a burden on society.

A full DNR is actually alot more then just not recessitating, it means all they are allowed to do is help releave pain and suffering, but nothing that would keep you alive or prevent you from dying. You can choose the degree when you fill one out, up to what I did which basically means they can't do anything.

My wife passed because she couldn't get into a local hospital due to it being full from flu patients (they even had a satellite center set up), she couldn't get Dialysis and they had to transfer her to another state (good samaritan hospital in portland oregon) so she could (but it took a week to get that set up. By that time she had an infection in her heart which killed her.

I'm not taking up resources so someone younger, with a family etc ends up dying because of me. I'm not in a rush to die, but I'm ready when it happens and don't need people to prevent it.
