To be fair, they wouldn't necessarily need to.

Every year, millions of people catch the flu, tens of thousands need to be hospitalized, and hundreds (if not thousands) die of it. Most people don't realize this, though, because it's rarely advertised. It's just that with this outbreak they're constantly updating statistics because it's worse than usual.

If you were capable of running a massive global conspiracy to fake something along those lines, all you'd really need to do is inflate the numbers that already exist. Because it's not as if anyone is ever going to be able to double-check the reports to confirm that every reported case is actually real.

That's not the case, though, and most conspiracy theorists are idiots, but there would absolutely be hospitalizations and deaths even if this thing was being faked.
