Justice League: The New Frontier (2008)

=Design=
This movie has some nice style it gets to use in its intro. I'm not art buff so not gonna name drop something to sound in the know. It's very flashy though and reminds me of the old intro cartoons from older movies. There is also a scene late in the film where two characters hallucinate and the art there goes into some acid trip status.

I don't really have any issue with the design, maybe wonder womans hook symbol on her corset armor looks like its impaling her in the heart in some scenes. Martian Manhunter also takes on a real dopey although appropiate silver age look. Maybe its just cause his face suddenly becomes green Mr Clean?

=Story=
This movie takes place across 7 years from 1953 to 1960. The first half of this film is spent following around Hal Jordan and Martian Manhunters origins. We do get some brief appearance that the JSA existed here with at least Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman but their ideals split the team. Since its the 50s its all about Russian paranoia and the American way, this can sadly take you out of the movie at times.

It's a weird film cause I spent so much more time enjoying Martian Manhunters journey among the people and Hal Jordan finding his purpose than I did anything else. When the threat of The Center reveals itself it has the same feel of Superman Returns. Battling an island is just never interesting.

Actually this films just weird all around. Its tone shifts drastically to weird propoganda film levels suddenly and the action never really picks up. The movie ends with implications how this universe in the grand DC universe would proceed if the Justice League existed starting from 1960 and moved in real time.

=Cast=
Jeremy Sisto as Batman: I like Batman in this, a lot. At one point Martian Manhunter and his cop partner find Batman fighting cultists trying to sacrifice a boy. When Batman tries to save him the boy is terrified and Batman becomes taken aback. Later Superman is in the Batcave and we are introduced to Robin, with Batman commenting he wanted to strike fear in the hearts of criminals not children. Sisto has been in a ton of stuff that I've never seen and we'll see him again in 7 years in this project.

David Boreanaz as Hal Jordan / Green Lantern: Couldn't even tell this was Boreanaz. Hal gets one of the best arcs start to finish and *checks notes* we were still 3 years from the live action stinker so color me shocked. I also really liked the green lantern ring doesnt immediately give him the juice, its a nice build up

Miguel Ferrer as J'onn J'onzz / John Jones / Martian Manhunter: The late great Miguel Ferrer was pretty perfect for this role. And Martian Manhunters storyline was great until he becomes Mr Cleans green nephew. After that his role drops down to...nothing.

Neil Patrick Harris as Barry Allen / The Flash: This was a miscast? Neil Patrick Harris sounds bored and stiff in most scenes. Flash is introduced onto the scene early saving Iris from Captain Cold. Hes then ambushed by the government spooks trying to disect him and then he randomly quits on tv. He returns later to become a focus and I dunno it just never clicked

Lucy Lawless as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman: Can't decide if I like this casting or not. On paper sure why not, but in execution its a shrug. Wonder Womans character is pretty grim at the start and then we cut to her later in a very pointless scene where the amazons are slaughtered....oh wait we dont see that. No instead we have her leadership challenged. She shows up bloodied in the invisible jet and aside from carrying people thats kinda it. Eh

Kyle MacLachlan as Kal-El / Clark Kent / Superman: We are now 2 superman actors in at this point and I'm down with both. Supermans fantastic in this film and used actually sparingly. Interestingly enough after getting everyone to work together he leads the charge on the Center and...gets blasted. He doesn't show up again til the ending! Wow

Kyra Sedgwick as Lois Lane: A much better Lois though just a bit reporter here. Quick name a Superman story where Lois doesn't crash a helicopter or plane.

Brooke Shields as Carol Ferris: Now knowing who played Carol this makes sense. Carol is a really stiff character and although her character shows some anger in animation the voice doesn't match

Keith David as The Centre: I thought this was Keith Davids silky smooth voice. Too bad this isn't really a character and more of alien island

Other minor roles: Ace Morgan, Rick Flag, Ray Palmer (whose shrink ray makes things explode instead lol), Robin, Captain Cold, and Aquaman (shows up to deliver Superman back and deliver a single line)

=Fun Stuff and Random Thoughts=

1.Animated intro style being like early cartoon animation is pretty fantastic. Frontrunner for intros I guess

2.Captain Cold comes in dressed as a member of an organization with the same letter thrice, its really uncomfortable!

4.Theres some guy with a Hood that gets merc'd pretty early unsure who that is?

5.Batmans ancient computers fantastic

6.Wow that ancient Batmobile wow. It has batmans head on the front for some reason

7.Martian Manhunter learning human culture by watching tv and morphing into real and fictional peoples fantastic

8.Blackhawk Squadron is part of the army, theres a crazy old reference

9.Theres also this guy that I can't identify. He never talks and is barely animated lol

10.The future look at the DC of this world is pretty much the same except they have Black Canary as a Teen Titan/Young Justice
