Turns out men don't usually even ask for custody. When they do ask they have about a 50% chance of winning like you expect.
But that could be 'a chicken or the egg' consideration. Census statistics show that about only 17.5% of custodial parents are fathers. Also, in the case of child support payments, the data favors mothers over fathers; about a third of fathers receive payments while half to two-thirds of mothers get payments.

You also have to consider 'why' there would be cases where fathers don't fight it out in courts to get custody. Things like 5/6 cases of the mother getting custody, knowing that there's a lower rate of child support if they do get custody, and in the cases of younger and less educated parents not knowing the legal system, can all play into it. It's not so simple as to imply that men somehow don't care about children. There will anecdotal cases, but it isn't the norm for someone to just write their children out of their lives.
