Cyrus is OP right from the start, and once you add scholar to Orphillia she is as well.

Therion or whatever the thief char is, rocks hard, and is pretty much mandatory for chests + deals with stealing (though you still need to level up merchant a bit for the non-steal able items).

Last char doesn't matter too much, and if you do all the stories you'll be swapping em around anyway till you finish them at least. You do need provoke/challenge eventually though so you need to level up the hunter or warrior.

With 2 scholars, and 2 warrior/thieves, early game is insanely easy. You can use SP steal for double attacks on off rounds and have a variety of weapons to break enemies with on your melee chars.

You can cast very hard hitting spells with both your cleric and scholar as well (also almost always able to hit a break element).

Both melee chars can double hit while gaining MP (sp steal), can hit all enemies (you can also go hunter with your thief though which gives the multi-bow attacks which is great for breaking). You have plenty of healing when/if you need it (rarely), and you cover all the out of combat abilities.

Cyrus eventually should snag archmage which makes him even more over the top.

As far as too many battles there is an ability you can grab (passive) that reduces the number of battles, it can often let you get through an area with only 1 or 2 random battles all together, and since you can teleport around at will, this means very few battles are needed to be fought.
