It mightve been kind of cool when it came out but looking back its almost as generic as SAO just with a more competent protagonist. Maybe its the madhouse animation? The animation, the art, the characters, the comedy, the world-building, and (IMO) most importantly: the sheer creativity in all of the different games/battles that they took part in. The fact that all of them were so different from each other and all of them were so interesting was a big part of what made the show fun for me to watch.
