A Republican lawmaker is facing scrutiny after posting a tweet on Tuesday that outed, by name, a man who left a 74-cent tip on a more than $100 check at a South Jersey restaurant. Declan O'Scanlon, R-Monmouth, "doxed" the bad tipper disclosing his personal information online after the lawmaker dined at the Colts Neck Inn. O'Scanlon said the restaurant was abuzz that a customer from the night before left a 74-cent tip on a $119.26 bill. "It strikes me that the jerks of the world tend to count on people not knowing theyre jerks and maybe its time for that to change," O'Scanlon told the Trenton Bureau for the USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey in a phone interview. "This guy didnt just fail to tip, he wanted it to sting. He calculated this and gave her 74 cents to make it hurt. And it did, and I think it sucks." O'Scanlon posted a photo of the customer's bill and the customer's name on social media drawing both support but also concern that an elected official was calling out a private citizen. The customer who left the less than 1 percent tip could not be reached for comment. "Well-done, sir Senator!" one Twitter user wrote. "I applaud you for posting this receipt," another typed. "I think you are completely out of line for sharing this guys information," another person responded. "State senators should not be outing people because they tip bad," wrote another.

O'Scanlon, who voted against a measure earlier this year that raised the state's minimum wage, said he stands by his decision to type out his concerns on Twitter. "Its my platform, and I want to use it to do as much good in the world as I possibly can," O'Scanlon said. "And if calling out jerks and defending decent people is part of that, I'm OK with that."
