A Republican lawmaker is facing scrutiny after posting a tweet on Tuesday that outed, by name, a man who left a 74-cent tip on a more than $100 check at a South Jersey restaurant. Declan O'Scanlon, R-Monmouth, "doxed" the bad tipper disclosing his personal information online after the lawmaker dined at the Colts Neck Inn. O'Scanlon said the restaurant was abuzz that a customer from the night before left a 74-cent tip on a $119.26 bill. "It strikes me that the jerks of the world tend to count on people not knowing theyre jerks and maybe its time for that to change," O'Scanlon told the Trenton Bureau for the USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey in a phone interview. "This guy didnt just fail to tip, he wanted it to sting. He calculated this and gave her 74 cents to make it hurt. And it did, and I think it sucks." O'Scanlon posted a photo of the customer's bill and the customer's name on social media drawing both support but also concern that an elected official was calling out a private citizen. The customer who left the less than 1 percent tip could not be reached for comment. "Well-done, sir Senator!" one Twitter user wrote. "I applaud you for posting this receipt," another typed. "I think you are completely out of line for sharing this guys information," another person responded. "State senators should not be outing people because they tip bad," wrote another.

O'Scanlon, who voted against a measure earlier this year that raised the state's minimum wage, said he stands by his decision to type out his concerns on Twitter. "Its my platform, and I want to use it to do as much good in the world as I possibly can," O'Scanlon said. "And if calling out jerks and defending decent people is part of that, I'm OK with that."

Not tipping at all is one thing. Rounding up the tip to the nearest whole dollar is a much more conscious decision that requires more effort.

It's easier to pay with a 100 and a $20 bill then to pay with exact change.

Doesn't matter. It's not mandatory and we have no idea if it was bad service. I don't see anything intentional or malicious in giving an amount that's the change from $120. It's not like it was $119.26 and he gave $.55 cents and kept the rest or something.

Definitely not doxx worthy. Like I said, move on to the next customer. NY and NJ is full of diehard tippers.

It was a debit card.

Anyway, this is one of those situations where everyone sucks. Waitress was bad at her job, customer was a petty jackass, senator was out of line.

People who dont tip are an inevitability. They are trashy, up their own ass and lack anything resembling class. But what are you going to do? Society is always going to have shitty people. Best to just move on.

Rounding up the bill to a whole number by "tipping" 74 cents is cheap, plain in simple. Would've been better if he didn't leave a tip at all.

That said, the lawmaker had no business to publicly call him out on that. That's not a good look either.

I usually try to be a generous tipper, but there was one time when me and two friends went to a restaurant that had been open for about 6 months. Id been there twice previously with bad service, but this one took the cake. In the hour we were there, the server came to our table twice (one for our initial order - beverages - and once to bring us the drinks). We couldnt get her attention ever to come over by us, nor could we get anyone else to assist us when wed get their attention (theyd say theyd find out server, but would then disappear).

After an hour (and only one round of drinks), we finally found her and said we wanted the bill. Only when she rang up one of our credit cards, she overcharged it. It took another 30 minutes for her to fix it. While she was trying to fix it, she came back and asked Can I get you a round of free drinks to make up for this? We said no, we just wanted to be done with all of this, and her response was Well just remember that I offered you free drinks and you refused them.

Thats when we decided she wasnt getting a bad tip, she was getting no tip. Only time Ive only done that. And it would suck if someone in a prominent position made us out to be the bad guys in this case when it was truly bad service. Who knows, the ripper could definitely be a jerk, but its unfair for a person with influence to just point the finger without all the background info.

If you're only tipping 74 cents, you're basically doing it to be a dick.

At least when someone doesn't tip at all, you can make the argument that they're just cheap or they happen to be low on funds that day.

None of that warrants 74 cents lol. If the service was bad then just give a 5-10% tip. The fact that the guy couldnt even give a dollar is ridiculous

two issues

1. why do we always assume a bad tip is the diner being an asshole? why cant we assume that maybe the service was horseshit?

2. what the senator SHOULE have done is use this as a point to bring up policy to make restaurants pay a decent wage to workers and abolish tipping culture in America
