Only wish society could continue to progress so men and women are treated equally and paid equally, homosexuality and gay marriage is legal and welcomed, prioritization of money over human rights and environment is discouraged, and just people being excellent to each other.

Prejudice and discrimination are hard-wired into our brains. WHO we choose to discriminate against can change across culture, but it seems like humans need someone to point and laugh at (or try and kill), because we can't function otherwise. "Labeling" is basically a byproduct of how we process the world, and is woven into nearly every aspect of how we function. And qualitative comparison is a natural step to take once you divide the world into "this" and "that" (or "them" and "us").

It's why you get proverbs like "Me against my brother, my brother and I against our cousin, the three of us against the stranger." And why so many people have said the only way we'll ever get peace on Earth and true human solidarity is if hostile aliens show up to kill us and we have to unite against them (and why that unity will only last so long as it takes to kill the last alien).

If we could ever reach a point where everyone saw everyone else as an equal and there was no discrimination or prejudice of any kind, we wouldn't be humans any more.
