I thought the story was good, not great. I absolutely HATED the open world stuff. It's like 2 completely incongruous games sloppily stapled together. That might be a side-effect of them starting to develop the game with the intention of it being a sequel/tie-in to FFXIII set in the same world, then at some point in development shifting it to its own world and rebranding it as FFXV. Maybe one half the game is closer to the original plans, while the other half was based on ideas they had once they'd re-pivoted the development. That shift might also be why they wound up cutting out a large chunk of backstory and releasing it as an animated movie and not as part of the game itself.
