Jack L Chalker went down the road of cacti creatures that liked to eat things alive, probably as a nod towards the fact we eat many types of plants that are still alive and can feel. In a way, it's more humane to eat beef/chicken etc, since it can no longer feel by the point we actually cook and eat it, meanwhile that lettuce you are munching on is aware and alive and screaming, you just can't hear it. --- "did you steal my f***in signature" Helly ...
