The sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks My brain always sort of categorizes that series as being "young adult" fantasy, but that might just be because I read them when I was a young teenager. They're not terrible for all that, though (even if the first couple books read like fairly common Tolkien clones and the much later books feel like endlessly churned out dreck to just cash another check - the Heritage of Shannara quadrilogy is kind of where it all peaked for me). And they can make for an effective starter series to segue into much better, more mature series.
