I'm not a huge fan of Gaiman in general, though I do acknowledge he isn't a terrible writer.

My brain always sort of categorizes that series as being "young adult" fantasy, but that might just be because I read them when I was a young teenager. They're not terrible for all that, though (even if the first couple books read like fairly common Tolkien clones and the much later books feel like endlessly churned out dreck to just cash another check - the Heritage of Shannara quadrilogy is kind of where it all peaked for me). And they can make for an effective starter series to segue into much better, more mature series.

Then again, Wikipedia tells me that The Graveyard Book is also young adult fiction, so I'm detecting a pattern in your purchases.

Aint nothing wrong with reading YA books.
It's better than not reading, which most people do.

Sure there are better things, but there's always better stuff, sometimes you want just a straightforward story.

What gave it away for me is that it's an MTV television series.

But like shadowsword said, there's nothing wrong with reading YA novel.

+ for Gaiman, although he has far better works.

- for Terry Brooks since his works are fantasy pot boilers, and he's very formulaic. If you've read one of his books, you've read them all.
