Words aren't necessary so taking people literally is asking to be wrong. What if they're just really inconsistent, or lying ? Are you prepared to give false judgement, and allow yourself to be blinded by their power games? If they're inconsistent then you can't trust their words to be accurate and if they're lying you can't trust their words to be accurate.
