There are likely plenty of bridges but, as the story notes, this is a shortcut. I mean a bridge right where the shortcut is. So, they can cross even when I train is there. Like around where they were hit. That's probably the area where most cross for the shortcut. Given how many other shortcuts are likely along the way, I'm not sure how feasible of a suggestion that is. And, in general, "popular shortcut" is vague.
