They're at the very bottom of the phone and don't protrude, how are you accidentally hitting them?

A physical button requires real force, so you don't accidentally hit them.

And software buttons only need a light touch so you don't need to "real force" every action.

Other than cost cutting, there wasn't a good reason to switch to software buttons. They're just inferior.

A smooth front is aesthetically pleasing and software buttons don't suffer from wobbles over time or mechanical failure. As long as you can power off/reset/debug with physical buttons, more are a waste.
