I'd argue that's a reason he shouldn't be rated that highly as a slasher icon. The first film is good in its own right - the twist of his mom being the killer, and his classic end scare - but he only became an icon after the studio churned out countless, often indistinguishable sequels. At least Freddy, Michael and Leatherface established themselves in their franchise's debut. That's why Norman Bates and Leatherface are probably my 2 favorite slasher villains - they're very bizarre and macabre, and leave a lasting impression in the first (best) installment.

That's definitely a good point. Add to that fact Jason didn't get his iconic look until the 3rd film in. Still, it's admirable that he persists still. You can't keep a good slasher down.
