One of the three titans of horror with Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger, I actually think Jason Voorhees is the slasher with the most pull in terms of icons; if not, he's at least level with Myers, and easily holds Freddy's severed head in his hands. He's one of only three fictional characters to have an MTV Lifetime Achievement Award after all. His classic-style hockey mask is instantly recognizable to anyone with just a little knowledge of pop culture to the point of synonymity. He's famous for films he's barely in (Friday the 13th), has made more cameo appearances across all mediums of pop culture than any other horror icon, and has one of the highest body counts in horror history. He's a villain capable of being frightening with a dose of humor added in, and even has elements of humanity that separate him from the unstoppable forces of Myers and Krueger. He's a mommy's boy at heart, a child who grew up hating the humanity that led to his mother's death. Many actors who have portrayed Jason state as much, even going so far as to say Jason's moral code includes sparing kids and animals. This is one of the most important aspects of Jason. He's basically a blank slate that viewers can project themselves onto; think along the lines of a more murderous, violent Link. He can appear to you as a basic predator killing for the fun of it, or someone more psychologically disturbed as the result of a horrible childhood, or course there's the aspect of cathartic joy you get from Jason's kills. In short, there's a lot more to Jason than may initially meet the eye, and I think that's the primary reason Jason is as famous as he is.
