People seem to think that major news agencies can just make shit up, journalistic integrity is a real thing and they will get major shit for getting things wrong, regardless of political affiliation.

There's the specter of libel suits -- which forced CNN to retract a story and fire some employees earlier this year -- but that's about it. Actual accountability is fairly low. Some news outlets -- like the Rolling Stone -- don't even fire anybody when they're busted for #FakeNews . However, in general, most of the stories involve taking clips out of context and spinning them into headlines to promote a chosen narrative. There's very little integrity or accountability at most media outlets. And why would there be? After all, the major networks have a near-monopoly on news.

That said they can choose what to report on and when but it's not like some wasteland of disinformation, we the consumer are held to at least some standard, and screeching "fake news!" does nothing to help.

...except for the fact that selective reporting can be and is used for disinformation. Especially when they choose to report on unverified claims. Even when they note that it's purely speculation, it still creates an impression within peoples' minds which is why it's completely irresponsible journalism.
