This is a very pivotal moment in 7th generation gaming. It brought horrifying spectacle to the AAA gaming scene, a moment that many games would take inspiration from to create their own shocking moments that everyone would talk about online and around the world. Even the Call of Duty series would have dedicated missions to shocking the player, like No Russian in MW2 and the London bombing that kills a family in MW3. Aftermath is the most successful to me though, for one large reason. It's more than just shock value. It plays a huge role in the game's theme, permanently killing off one of the main playable characters and marking it as both a permanent failure for both the Marines in the game and the player as participant. This is one of the game's darkest ways of deriding and condemning war. Against the backdrop of a mushroom cloud, with hallucinatory cries of children's laughter echoing against the ruined city landscape, Sgt. Paul Jackson becomes just another name lost in senseless destruction. That's perhaps the scariest thought of all. After all, the mission is called Aftermath. As Jackson climbs out of his ruined helicopter, surrounded by your teammates and a soldier you risked your life to save for nothing, the damage has already been done. The sight of the mushroom cloud is chilling, but nothing compares to the names compiled on the KIA list the game shows you after the mission. Your apparent heroism, your accomplishments as a player, it's all wiped away. Aftermath was a twist like no other, and still remains a great moment in gaming to this day.
