And yet somehow it's responsible for my stupidest relatives.

So it's just your personal issues that are the problem then. Gotcha.

...and yet it's mostly people from the tri-state area mocking it, not some corn huskers from Nebraska or... um, alligators from Florida.

Yeah, which is where the "jealousy" part comes in. Ignorance applies when you're talking about someone who doesn't know what they're talking about at all, and mostly just parroting back things they've heard on TV or in movies where people shit on it (see also your convenient link from earlier that more or less proves my point). Jealousy is more from people who live close enough to know better but still cling to the stereotypes more in self-defense of their own area than out of any real willingness to be open-minded about things.

Because, I mean, a lot of the NJ abuse I hear in real life comes from New Yorkers (especially the sorts of people who are dismissive of the "bridge and tunnel" crowd) - but you couldn't pay me enough to live in NYC. For every plus there's always at least a few minuses (like having cockroaches, dog-sized rats, and constantly smelling like urine).

If I didn't work in New England, I certainly wouldn't "choose" to live in New England. The taxes are obscene and the weather is terrible. Granted, I'll take CT over Jersey any day of the week despite hating my state's government.

I'd probably rate CT as "tolerable", though its certainly got its own issues. Most of the states north are either a bit too pretentious (hello, Mass!) or just a bit too hick-y for my tastes (hello New Hampshire!).

But as for not wanting to live in New England, I'd probably flip it the other way around and say that there aren't all that many places outside of the Northeast that I'd be able to stomach on a long-term basis. Once you get into Delaware or Maryland or go much beyond Ohio, it seems like there's way too much open space and any number of terrible things worth avoiding.

It also goes hand-in-hand with when people on this board throw tantrums about how religion sucks and every religious person is an asshole and then admit that they live in the South/Bible Belt. It's like, no fucking shit - maybe you should move. I like that a lot of the Northeast seems to have a fair bit of open-mindedness about things without being too PC/SJW about it (hello West Coast!).

I also like the faster pace of life and the lack of people shitting on you behind your back while pretending to be nice that you see a lot more in the South, but that's also likely one of those things where I like what I'm already used to from growing up here. A lot of my bluntness and sarcasm and intolerance of bullshit is probably rooted in the Jersey part of me.

I'm sure someday I'll find a *nice* part of the state. Most of my friends, relatives, etc, all live in the north, though, which is nothing short of a dreadful region.

Well, depending on which part of the "north" you're talking about, keep in mind that a lot of the northeast counties are pretty much built on the outflow of human garbage/urban blight pouring out of NYC (in the same way that Camden sucks almost entirely because of Philadelphia).

Conversely, there are areas in the northwest and much farther south that could pretty much BE part of "The South" for how backwoodsy they are. While most of the wealth is sort of concentrated in the middle. I can hit a ton of different biomes and socio-economic strata within an hour or two drive.
