That's the only way to make it stop. No, the best method for minimizing damage is to call for help and to run. While I'm a firm believer in the Second Amendment and Stand Your Ground, I also recognize that it's fucking stupid to take damage in a fight when you could avoid the fight entirely. And, if you're being attacked, usually the best option is calling for help (or drawing attention) while trying to flee.
