Which age range is gen x and gen y?

Gen Z, iGen, or Centennials: Born 1996 and later

Millennials or Gen Y: Born 1977 to 1995

The real problem is, there ISN'T an official definition of the age range, and multiple sources use multiple dates. The range you cited is actually one of the less common ones (a majority of sources tend to lump the 70s into Gen X and count Gen Y as starting in the early 80s).

Until people actually agree on what the word MEANS, it's difficult at best to criticize people for "mis-using" it. Someone born in 1997 IS a Millennial by some versions of the scale, while other versions say they aren't.

@Muffinz0rz It's a generalization based on trending, of course not everyone are the same but the tendency is here.

but in the end people are calling 'millenials' to people who are not milenials anymore

To be fair, the entire term is meaningless anyway, because the modern technological era has rapidly accelerated the pace of cultural change, radically shortening the "generational" period in terms of shared cohort experience.

Realistically, the Gen Y/Millennial group should be divided into at LEAST two different groups (personally, I prefer to keep the older Gen Y designation for the older half while only using Millennial for the younger half). The other alternative would be to drop the entire concept of "generations" and just go with the categorization the Internet has basically latched onto already anyway (ie, "80s kids", "90s kids", etc).

Very few of the trends that apply to people born in 1980 apply to people born in 1995 or so.
