There seems to be some variance on generational beginning and end dates.

I've seen millennial date listed as late as 1984-2004, I generally go with the easier 1980-2000.

Or we could just stop encouraging the generalization of massive groups of people based solely on the fact that they were born within the same 20 year range.

"Millennials are so entitled and lazy"

Great. You must be some kind of god. It must take some sort of miracle to know that every single person, out of tens of millions, is entitled and lazy. Knowing that there is not one single exception is nothing short of godlike.

@Muffinz0rz It's a generalization based on trending, of course not everyone are the same but the tendency is here.

The real problem is, there ISN'T an official definition of the age range, and multiple sources use multiple dates. The range you cited is actually one of the less common ones (a majority of sources tend to lump the 70s into Gen X and count Gen Y as starting in the early 80s).

Until people actually agree on what the word MEANS, it's difficult at best to criticize people for "mis-using" it. Someone born in 1997 IS a Millennial by some versions of the scale, while other versions say they aren't.

To be fair, the entire term is meaningless anyway, because the modern technological era has rapidly accelerated the pace of cultural change, radically shortening the "generational" period in terms of shared cohort experience.

Realistically, the Gen Y/Millennial group should be divided into at LEAST two different groups (personally, I prefer to keep the older Gen Y designation for the older half while only using Millennial for the younger half). The other alternative would be to drop the entire concept of "generations" and just go with the categorization the Internet has basically latched onto already anyway (ie, "80s kids", "90s kids", etc).

Very few of the trends that apply to people born in 1980 apply to people born in 1995 or so.

Uh, then those people don't know how generations work

You don't "outgrow" your generational label. Millennials don't turn 35 and suddenly turn into Gen Yers (or whatever the previous label is).

Either way, it shows the stupidity of said people who views these massive clumps of people as exactly the same.

Before the term "millennial" caught on, we had Gen Y and the slightly older "Cold War" Y.

Only 90s kids remember real generations.

I've never seen myself referred to as "Gen Y"

Gen X usually goes up to 1980.
