Backtracking and apologizing just because you didn't get away with something is pathetic, yes, but mistakes happen, and it's certainly not unheard of to cross a line without noticing or meaning to. I'd be cool with an apology there, because they're actually apologizing for making a mistake, as opposed to regretting being caught doing something wrong and trying to weasel their way out of the consequences. --- This is my signature.
