In the book, the dog dives into an underground sewer like system to save the girl.

In the movie it makes absolutely no sense anyways....seriously.

The cop, lets the girl go, not trying to save her, in order to chase after the guy who kidnapped her. Yeah, the dog jumped in after her, but common, how would the cop know the dog could save her?

Also, why did the bad guy suddenly have a gun all of a sudden, and why sneak up behind the cop with the gun instead of just shooting him from cover?

None of it made sense in the movie at all to be honest, but it did in the book.

That whole part was truncated (he was supposed to be passed off from the male cop to a female cop if I remember right), and he (even though he was a she at the time) was supposed to be old and retired (having been brought to a school to show kids a police dog) when all this happened.

I realize you have to shorten things to fit them all in, but yeah, they really screwed the pooch on that part.
