Lopen 03/13/17 3:36:27 PM #15:	Royal Rumble 2016 The gimmick behind this Rumble is it's for the title, and Roman Reigns at #1 must defend his title. You once again start with the two last guys from the last rumble, Roman Reigns and Rusev. Roman eliminates Rusev in short order, leading to #3, AJ Styles, who comes out to a massive reaction. Now I feel like if this was a well structured Rumble, this is where I'd say "this is where the Rumble really begins" but well, not really. On the generic end, too much laying around and too much Dragonballing, and a lack of threats early, but the biggest thing is the announcing in this one is the worst yet, as Michael Cole and JBL are instantly generating in depth Rumble stats for each wrestler that comes out occupying 30 seconds, and the transition off of that usually involves awkward silence-- the dumbest instance is when Michael Cole rattles off the exact number of Rumbles Jack Swagger has been in simultaneously with the opening of his music-- like if this were real even if Michael Cole knew Swagger's statz off the top of his head he wouldn't be able to recite it as quickly. I feel like this irritation is going to haunt me in every Rumble from now till the day I die. Cannot unsee. Now let's go through the moments-- most of which are annoying this time around. Around number 12 you have R-Truth come out, set up a ladder in the ring, climb the ladder as everyone stares. DAT CRAZY TRUTH DON'T KNOW WHAT MATCH IT IS!! I love Truth but come on. Totally breaks momentum. Around number 15, the League of Nations (remember these guys? me neither) assault Roman Reigns. An entire number and a half is spent assaulting Roman, Roman getting stretchered out, Roman deciding "no, I can walk, I'll walk ou--" wait wait if you can walk why are you leaving? What a heel. The Wyatts (sans Bray) repeat the Show/Kane methodical dissection of the ring. This was so good last year let's do it again. Brock comes out around 23. This is actually fun for a while with him suplexing all over the place. Miz comes out at 25 or so and is like "nope" and heads to the announce desk to 'bide his time'. Brock ends the Wyatt menace, but then Bray comes out 26 or so, and rather than enter the ring, sicks the Wyatts, who Brock already eliminated, on Brock. Brock handles them AGAIN, and has Bray alone-- they enter the ring AGAIN and finally get rid of him. Why shouldn't Bray just have these clowns do this for everyone. Ziggler hits at 28, Miz decides to "take his moment" and attack Ziggler-- this serves to highlight what a heel Roman is as he hits the ring at 29, selling no injuries whatsoever. Triple H at 30 wins totally clean, eliminating both Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose in succession, which makes sense cause Roman is the heel here. I'd originally thought I might reflect on this more favorably on a second watch, that maybe I'd been soured on it cause of Triple H winning-- but it turns out any hype I had for it depended on not knowing AJ Styles would be just another guy, or that Dean Ambrose had no chance to win. It being a Triple H vanity project (no doubt in my mind that he wanted to eliminate Reigns for the pop, win the title in a Rumble cause his buddy Ric did, and win two Rumbles cause RECORDZ) was just a small part of what this Rumble did wrong. It's basically 1999 in a lot of ways, with much worse commentary. Dave Meltzer apparently rated this 4. I don't think I can take any of his thoughts on a Rumble seriously ever again.
