That's basically what the impeachment trial was, except he got off because everyone on the Republican side voted to acquit regardless of how guilty they felt he was, since they felt showing their loyalty to him and the party was more beneficial than holding him accountable (McConnell all but explicitly said as much). He could still be criminally prosecuted, potentially, but I suspect that would be a very hard charge to stick after he'd already been acquitted of it in a slightly different context.
