Well, for one thing, he would have been arrested in Japan, not the US. And even in the US, if you were arrested and charged and the police were all like "He's guilty but we're not going to tell you how he did it", any good defense lawyer would have the case dismissed out of hand in about 20 minutes. And Light's not poor or "ethnic", so he'd probably have a good lawyer. The real problem is that, in a scenario where you are apparently magically killing people from a distance, you'd never be arrested. You'd almost certainly get "disappeared" by one group or another trying to figure out how you did it. Which would likely involve a lot of torture - and probably some dissections, because they'd have no way of knowing if it was an innate ability of your own or something you were using as a tool.
