As much as I enjoyed the 1984 Dune by David Lynch, I think it had similar results because it was overwhelming in terms of lore and background information.

That's kind of how I feel about the Souls series' approach to story. There's a lot of really interesting lore in that universe, but it's all dumped on you pretty haphazardly and with little explanation of key concepts, so it's hard to follow in the course of playing the game. It's well worth digging into, but the actual experience of playing tends to just be "go here and kill this because plot that you'll look up later." A lot of people like that it doesn't bombard the player with cutscenes that spell everything out, and I think that's valid (especially for a game with so much replay value, where story cutscenes just become annoying after seeing them so many times), but I think I would prefer just a little more explicit exposition overall.
