Actually, I think The Simpsons, South Park's closest contemporary, is DECIDEDLY ANYTHING BUT THIS, at least during its golden years. The Simpsons has always had cynical takes but they're always couched in a deep level of optimism, empathy, and respect for others, which is the magic ingredient that I think South Park is sorely lacking.
