Honnestly girl is a compliment, meaning someone is hot/young if anything (and not just used as a generalized term).

Boy can mean a guy is immature etc, and is not often used as a compliment at all, even the term fuck boy, is mostly derogatory (kinda like calling a girl a slut).

I've never called a woman a girl in a bad way, and I use girl to describe women all the time (although admittingly usually not much older women).

In general though you can use both girl and boy to describe either gender in many ways without meaning anything.

I'm gonna go hang with the boys for a bit honey.
Me and the girls are gonna hit a movie tonight!!
That girl is smoooookin!!!
Woah boy, lay off the puppy eyes, we'll go to the concert!!
