It's sort of like Star Wars fandom where the more you look into it and the more you read about it, the more details you find. Like about which ace pilots on the Fed and Zeon side were present at each battle, how high were their kill counts, characters whose names you barely or never even saw in the actual TV series. It's also worth noting that there are some differences between the movies and the TV series, and the manga follows the movie version of events.
