yeah the scene is definitely cringe. I actually forgot all about it though since it's such a minor thing, it didn't really stick with me.

you could try to give him credit and say he was just showing how the kids on the ship are innocent, totally unaware of the danger they are in -- acting immature and making stupid jokes while playing around. on the other hand you could totally say he is a creep who was just looking for an excuse to have his animators put this kind of scene into a high budget production.

as I said before, I don't really think there's any defending the inclusion since I don't personally think it adds anything to the story, and showing it is just mildly weird at best. all that being said I guess it's a reality you have to accept when you consume media from other cultures. sometimes their standards are different in ways you might not expect, and you'll be exposed to things that are innocuous to others but will make you uncomfortable.

lastly, I'm actually surprised you think family bathing is a japanese thing. I can think of numerous examples of people I've known with kids who either supervise them, help them with bathing, or even assist in washing them directly depending on how young the child is. maybe other people can correct me on this but I don't think it's a uniquely japanese experience that kids would need supervision and/or help with bathing.
