Most of those complaints aren't specific to WH but tabletop wargaming in general. Cost of entry generally tends to be unreasonably high.

That said, I'm surprised that you can't seem to find many resources discussing these things because they *must* exist. I know back in the 2000s I used to check out a site devoted to Lizardmen which covered units, had some information about play, painting tips, and terrain building (and there an insane number of terrain building videos on YT)

I assume that you could probably just watch videos of matches to get some idea for how things can play. That's probably where I'd start, unless you like a faction just for its aesthetics. Honestly, if I was starting any kind of a wargame system, I'd probably pick a faction based on aesthetics and just learn how to play that.

That or find out where people play in your area and hang out there for a while before you invest anything.
