1) cost of entry
2) lack of easy information on the races and factions play styles.

I mean 100 USDs will get you the core rule book and your races codex(that is if you have an idea, the two minimum things you need regardless of what you play. And neither is a single model on the table.

And the second point is just the play styles of the various races and factions are hard to know. Because they have so many that are similar and so many that are so different. And the guys at the GamesWorkshops are ALWAYS biased at least a little, like my local one will not recommend Tau to someone who pretty much already pledged for the greater good and didn't realize it because he hates them that much. And the core rule book? Generally half of the book is lore of the various races, but do you think they tell you anything about how they play on the table? Not even a little.

Its a shame really because I would love to have more people to play, but I can't recommend it to anyone because it's so very easy to spend 700+ dollars into an army you think you would like, and see someone playing something else that you didnt think to research and found out that is what you really wanted to play

If you're talking about 40k, the biggest problem is the existence of Space Marines.

My Tyranids have been on the receiving end of Mephiston from the Blood Angels. I honestly cannot tell if my friend is simply that good at using him, that good at rolling high, I was bad at using my Tyranids, or Mephiston is just that overpowered. We were playing with maybe 800-1,000 points armies.

EDIT: After reading about Draigo from the Grey Knights, where does he stand compared to Mephiston?

Depends on yer entry. My friends and into it together so we needed only one core rule book among us. Still, with the $20ish codex we had maybe $70ish left for models which is not a lot but sufficient to start somewhere. In lieu of proper cover, terrain, etc. we used books, CDs, paper, etc.

That said, 100 USDs will definitely go a longer way in other hobbies. Pretty sure I can make a decent Magic the Gathering set with that much. On average my decks were $40-60 if I was willing to buy 2-4 copies of the better cards for a particular build.

Most of those complaints aren't specific to WH but tabletop wargaming in general. Cost of entry generally tends to be unreasonably high.

That said, I'm surprised that you can't seem to find many resources discussing these things because they *must* exist. I know back in the 2000s I used to check out a site devoted to Lizardmen which covered units, had some information about play, painting tips, and terrain building (and there an insane number of terrain building videos on YT)

I assume that you could probably just watch videos of matches to get some idea for how things can play. That's probably where I'd start, unless you like a faction just for its aesthetics. Honestly, if I was starting any kind of a wargame system, I'd probably pick a faction based on aesthetics and just learn how to play that.

That or find out where people play in your area and hang out there for a while before you invest anything.

You should have responded, "How many Mead shitposts do you think you need?" You missed a golden opportunity.

Both of these are why I recommend new players start with Blood Bowl or Necromunda. Both cheap and easy to get into.

Books for sure. I'll admit I don't know or have talked to quite as many Warhammer players as D&D players, but I've noticed a lot of D&D player are totally cool with cheaper figures/substitutions/etc. But like all of the Warhammer players I've heard from are super into their figures. And the figures from what I keep hearing at least tend to be kinda pricey.

But I'm not into it tbh because I'm broke af and have no one to play with anyway. So it's all just from what I've picked up hearing people talk about it.

The books are the most annoying part since, well, it's like having to pay money for Version Updates.... that's EA's model!
