Basically, once they've convinced you that $60 is the standard price for a game, they can sort of get away with charging the same price for digital and not necessarily sell digital for cheaper. Even now, you'll notice that a lot of games sell for basically the same price digital as they do physical (they'll occasionally use "Oh, we're not allowed to undercut physical media sellers" to justify it, but that's not really the reason at all. And they'll just find another excuse if that one stops being viable).

And that's before we get into things like deluxe editions, season passes, DLC, microtransactions, and other forms of extended payment that disguise the "real" cost of the game you're playing even more. If you pay $60 for a game but wind up investing another $100 into it before you're done, it's not really a $60 game.
