We can't even get a fair number of games to work on the console they're supposed to be on as-is. At least not without multiple patches and constant tinkering.

The main problems in gaming mostly stem from the business model, where there's always incentive to release broken games and keep releasing multiple exclusive consoles/platforms (which is why we're now bordering having a "console war" for PC in spite of PC not even having consoles). As long as that doesn't change (and it almost certainly won't), they'll never be motivation to streamline gaming down into a single distribution model that actually benefits the consumer.
