I agree that this is just ignorance at play. I'm white, and I have very long, thick, dark brown hair, and I like wearing it down. Even though it's straight and a pretty common colour, I'll usually get a "oh your hair is so long!" from random people at the store or if I'm waiting in line somewhere. There is a video of a remote tribe seeing a white person for the first time ever.

After the initial shock, they basically touch him all over.
