It happened to me once when I was ~13, and it was probably the most awkward thing I've ever experienced. I told them I wasn't religious, but I was perfectly fine with bowing my head/holding hands/etc while they prayed. The mom seemed pretty upset, but thankfully the dad stepped in and calmed her down. I never got invited to dinner at their house again, but they were alright with me still being friends with their son and he was allowed to come over to my house occasionally.
