First of all, it wasn't a strawman.

the original post that sparked this conversation definitely was.

Toast said "This isn't capitalism" and you responded with "USA isn't capitalist?". Toast was never attempting to claim the USA isn't capitalist at all -- you created a straw man and attacked it.

I just explained it in the last post.

The answer is USA is capitalist.
USA has social programs paid for via tax dollars.
So toast was wrong.
That is not a strawman.

Though also explained above, he might have been reading the copypasta in a different way.

i feel like you're being intentionally obtuse as this point.

why did you respond to Toast with a question that had nothing at all to do with his statement?

Toast claimed that your example was not capitalism. Your response was "You mean the USA isn't capitalist?".

Which is better to do:

1. Wrong it is capitalism
2. Ask a question to have a conversation that allows you to explain how it is capitalism

asking a question is good. but ask a question pertinent to the statement you're responding to.

Bad Approach --
Toast: "This isn't capitalism"
Phoenix: "Why are you saying the USA isn't capitalist?"

Good Approach --
Toast: "This isn't capitalism"
Phoenix: "Why do you think it isn't capitalism?"
