One of the great tragedies of the modern gaming era is that Fortnite has probably made more money than any of the best-selling games of all time. It's the same reason why companies like EA are making more than 50% of their annual profits from microtransactions, and thus are so keen to sacrifice anything and everything in order to turn every game they product into a "live service" rather than a game.
When gaming left the arcades and entered our living rooms, we left behind the need to constantly feed quarters into every game - and now publishers have figured out a way to put the leash back on.
