I'm not convinced that we don't already have many parties. The Democrat Party and the Republican Party are effectively coalitions of smaller parties, just with greater unity than that of those others in a Parliamentary system. I don't think that having a third or fourth party would accomplish much beyond forcing one of the two parties to move further left or right (depending on what will get them more votes) on specific issues that are popular with the third party.

I do agree that the electoral system could (or should) change, but I don't think "two viable parties" is an issue when there are 'mini-parties' within the two parties.

every major party in every country is effectively a coalition of smaller parties by this logic, even the lib dems in the UK (which has a crappy first past the post system too despite being parliamentary) have their right and left wings

I don't think there should just be one or two more parties, either
