Topic | regarding VGMC 12 (TWO WEEK WARNING!) |
azuarc 02/15/18 10:26:16 AM #1: | For the new or unfamiliar: Video Games Music Contest (VGMC) is an annual contest where we vote on songs to appear in a tournament bracket, and then vote the winners. For many people, the nomination period is the most exciting. If you would like to nominate, or support other nominations, you will be able to give a vote to 20 songs. Additionally, 5 of those songs that are especially important to you can be double-voted. The 128 top vote-getters will appear in the bracket. Any song from a video game is eligible, provided that: 1) It's original to a video game. 2) It hasn't done exceptionally well in a past contest and been "retired". ... Hey folks, this message is to inform you to be aware that VGMC is lurking on the horizon. I am planning to open the topic on or about MARCH FIRST, plus or minus 24 hours. That is two weeks from today. Nominations will remain open for roughly two weeks, as well. The good news is that I checked the parser today, and the script still works. I had feared when we switched domain names, or simply at some point in the last year, the code running the forums might have changed formats, but my test page seems to work fine. That was the main reason I looked into VGMC now rather than later -- in case I needed to scramble for help, since the creator has stepped back from supporting it. Nominations will be the standard process of 20 nominations with 5 doubles. While I liked the two-phase method I used in my first year, it was also more work and more confusion, and there were no definitive results that it was actually any better than our classic method, provided that we have the script. I am still toying with ideas for a side bracket, supposing I run one. One thought was to do a sort of Best OST lite, since I haven't run that tournament in like 3 1/2 years now. (Nominations for that would be done strictly by direct input to a spreadsheet, because I am sure AF not handling data entry for that while VGMC noms are open.) Another thought was to siphon off all the songs that had made repeat appearances in the last, say, 3 years and funnel them into their own bracket...except there are actually only 14 such songs. So that doesn't work so well. Therefore, I dunno. I might just skip the side bracket. But now would be the time if you had any intention to discuss policy changes, such as readmitting retired tracks or lobbying to include a wider variety of tracks (though I have been fairly lenient on this.) I'm not saying I'm going to listen, but I will listen, if you know what I mean. More importantly, though, this is simply the time to start thinking about what you'd like to nominate. Old favorites, new games, fresh discoveries, etc...and, of course, not to be caught off-guard by being unaware the thread was even here. Oh, and feel free to try to find people who would be interested in participating. New blood to freshen up the song selection is almost always a good thing. Plus, we want our regulars who may have taken a break from B8 to know. My final caveat is that my personal life has the potential to flare up on short notice and force that to take over. Months ago, my landlord said he wanted to sell the house I'm in, and he hasn't said much about that since, but if I suddenly have to move, I'll be a bit busy. Hopefully that won't interfere with nominations, but I would certainly like to know who's on-board to help out if I get busy. --- ... Copied to Clipboard! |
