Part 6 is my favorite one so I kinda have to disagree with this topic in general.

7 isn't bad if you can suspend your disbelief enough but I admit that is a hard-ask.

Found 8 too slow and plodding and 9 was stupid for a bunch of reasons.

X was an awful concept somehow turned into a serviceable (if ridiculous) movie.

The problem with doing what's stated in the OP, hand-waiving the previous entries in-universe is that if the new movie isn't a big enough success it was all for nothing (kinda like the reboot they did). It ultimately serves nothing and no-one except potentially disappointing the pre-existing fans -- new ones won't give a crap because they won't know.

I think it's easy enough to continue these movies. Have little nods/easter-eggs to the previous ones (except Goes to Hell because that really is impossible to incorporate without ruining the entire franchise) and just put him in another situation to torment a group of people. Lay on the atmospere, get creative with the kills and you got yourself a slasher flick. It'll never get critical praise without reinventing the wheel but if they did that, it wouldn't be a slasher.
